Proposal to apply some of my suggestions to some abuse filters
[edit]There are two cases of some identical abuse filters, some of which I would like to propose my suggestions for them:
- The spambot filters are identical, but filter 104 should also disallow spambot accounts to allow anti-vandalism patrollers to report them more easily, and 164 should either be disabled or even deleted (what's the added benefit of using a private filter to only disallow registered spambots?):
- Special:AbuseFilter/104
- Special:AbuseFilter/164
- User/user talk page blanking filters. They do the same thing, but 362 would have also prevented Special:AbuseLog/3045702. Do we also need filter 35 to warn then block autopromote? Disallowing would have the same effect, as users should not blank user and user talk pages:
- Special:AbuseFilter/35
- Special:AbuseFilter/362
Also, for 104 we should opt-out Meta itself using wiki_name != "metawiki"
because private filter 121 blocks the spambots locally. Thank you. Codename Noreste (talk) 00:18, 23 December 2024 (UTC)
- I had a quick look at these filters. It seems like these filters were more or less independently developed and later converged more towards one another (with the most significant difference that filter 104 also matches IPs). The notes of filter 164 already mention a potential merge with filter 104 when temporary accounts are launched. I'll ping @XXBlackburnXx and SHB2000: since they were the last ones to work on the concerning filters. Concerning the user page filters, I see more pronounced differences (for example in the criteria used to identify edits & how it deals with redirects...). Filter 362 is more refined in that respect. I'll give an additional ping to colleage @Billinghurst: since he is more familiar with the latter filters. Daniuu (talk) 20:03, 27 December 2024 (UTC)
- I kept 104 and 164 separated back in May, for 2 key reasons: 1) 104 has always targeted IP edits, and I was concerned about potentially breaking someone’s script (if there existed one) by making a sudden change. 2) Separating them makes it easier to distinguish between registered accounts and IP edits, which could simplify the stewards’ work, though I don’t know if that’s the case these days, since pretty much everything gets reported to SRG anyway. That said, I’m not opposed to merging them. - Yeah, agreed – though I'll probably defer to you three since you know way more about the specific nuances than I do. --SHB2000 (t • c) 22:01, 27 December 2024 (UTC)
- I, as a non-admin, can also help as well. Codename Noreste (talk) 02:57, 28 December 2024 (UTC)

Request for help in connection with information about efforts to hack my account
[edit]Hello. I received two emails - one on December 21 and another on December 24 about multiple failed attempts to log into Wikipedia as Hindustanilanguage (my username). It is strange that someone wants to impersonate me in the Wikiworld. As I am being targetted repeatedly, I would like to know the geographic location and/or IP address from where this mischief is being carried so that I can be more alert. Thank you. --Muzammil (talk) 06:30, 2 January 2025 (UTC)
- @Hindustanilanguage, have you changed your password to a new and safer version? You could also think about activating 2FA for way more security. TenWhile6 09:11, 2 January 2025 (UTC)
- Not done due to our privacy policy information about network sources of account is not able to be disclosed. Some steps you can do:
- Ensure you have a strong, unique password on your account
- Ensure your recovery email is strongly secured, using multi-factor authentication if available
- Consider enrolling in our multi-factor authentication system. (see Steward requests/Global permissions#Requests for 2 Factor Auth tester permissions
- If the notifications are annoying you, you can suppress them in your prefernces.
